The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada (United Association or UA for short) requires contractors that are hiring their local union laborers to hold a Wage and Welfare Bond (Union Bond).
The UA represents HVACR service technicians, metal trades workers, pipefitters, pipeliners, plumbers, sprinkler fitters, steamfitters, and welders across the United States. So, there’s a good chance that one or more of your employees is an active union member.
Jet Insurance Company provides the United Association Wage and Welfare Bond to financially guarantee that restitution is available should an employer fail or refuse to pay rightfully earned wages, fringe benefits, or any other union dues to the employee themselves or the local union.
The local UA union that the laborer is a member of will be the one to determine the required bond amount. Wage and Welfare Bond limits are typically based on the average total hours worked by the employee, approximate wages and benefits due, and any other union dues.
At Jet, approved rates for a Union Bond take into consideration the bond amount and the personal credit score of the employer. With bond limits larger than $10,000, a review of the employer’s business finances is needed. The chart below provides starting rates for preferred credit at different bond limits.
Bond Limit | Monthly Cost | 1-Year Cost |
---|---|---|
Up tp $10,000 | $20 | $200 |
$25,000 | $50 | $500 |
$50,000 | $100 | $1,000 |
$100,000 | $200 | $2,000 |
Jet’s online United Association Wage and Welfare Bond application can be completed in a matter of minutes. To begin, general information is needed (e.g. contact details, bond limit required, and the social security number of the employer). No need to worry about that last requirement—Jet only runs a soft credit check so it won’t impact on your score. If you are seeking a higher bond limit (over $10k), a Jet underwriter will contact you for further information regarding your business. Either way, you’ll receive approved rate options that are available for immediate purchase as soon as the application has been processed. Simply choose the best bond term for you and follow through with payment. Shortly after, a copy of your receipt and bond form will be sent to the email provided.
The Jet team can file your bond form for you! However, if you’d like to take care of filing the bond yourself, the option to do so may be selected at check out.
The original signed and sealed United Association Union Bond, along with any other required employee documents, must be filed with the local union office that your employee is a member of.
