Transporters of unrefined timber or other wood products must file a $15,000 Timber Permit Bond with the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles before being permitted to use public roadways for such transfers. This bond is used to reimburse the cost of damages to highways, roads, or bridges caused by the transport of timber when the motor carrier fails to do so.

You will need to make sure that you have an active bond as you renew your timber permit each year. When your bond term is ending, Jet will send you a notice through mail and email. You can choose either method to renew — online is fastest! Just select your new term and submit payment, no additional paperwork is required.
If you need to cancel your bond, send us an email to [email protected]. We will request cancellation with the DOT but the bond will be held for an extra 30 days before the cancellation is complete. After the 30 days are up, Jet will take any unused time from the prepaid term and calculate it into a refund. Monthly payments are not eligible for a refund and will be stopped after the 30-day cancellation period has ended.
The Timber Permit Bond is required by the State to prevent damages to county roads and bridges and state highways when moving unrefined timber (as well as wood chips, wood biomass, or machinery used for loading timber), specifically as a result of:
You are responsible for reimbursing the State or County for any damage you caused as a violation of your permit obligations. If you refuse to reimburse the damages or are unable to do so, the DOT or the County will file a claim against your Timber Permit Bond. If you receive a claim, you must let Jet know right away. Our team will defend you against claims that don’t have any merit, but if the conditions of the bond actually have been violated, Jet will have to pay the claim out of the bond.
To continue transporting timber, you will need to restore your bond by paying Jet back within 30 days. Failure to do so will result in your timber permit expiring on the 31st day after Jet paid for your damages.
Perhaps. A carrier that needs to notify a county under Section 623.323 must show financial responsibility through a motor vehicle liability insurance policy. An alternative to this insurance policy is a surety bond specified in Section 601.121 of the Texas Transportation Code.
