The Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, and Transportation International Association (SMART) requires employers of their Local Union No. 67 members to acquire a custom Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 67 Bond, otherwise known as the Texas Local Union 67 Wage and Welfare Bond.
Jet Insurance Company provides the Local Union 67 Wage and Welfare Bond to act as a form of financial assurance that the union member will fulfill all contractual obligations, which includes appropriately contributing to the SMART International Association’s various worker funds (Health and Welfare Plan, Pension Funds, etc.) for each hour paid for and performed by employed sheet metal workers. If the employer fails to uphold such requirements, the surety bond may be used to cover any overdue funds and/or administrative costs incurred by the Association.

Your required limit for the Local Union 67 Wage and Welfare Bond is based on either the number of hours worked by your union member employees in the past year or your overall contribution for fringe benefits. The SMART International Association, Local Union No. 67 will determine the calculation process and appropriate custom limit ranging from $10,000 to $100,000.
As for an idea of what your custom bond limit should look like, the Association will either mandate a bond limit that is equal to 170 hours of wages for each union member employed or they will require an amount equal to the total contributions made for fringe benefits such as 401-K’s, Equality Funds, and/or Industry Funds. Whichever amount is greater will be the Association’s chosen bond limit.

$10,000 | $250 |
$25,000 | $500 |
$50,000 | $1,000 |
$100,000 | $2,000 |

As an employer of the Sheet Metal Workers Local Union No. 67, you are expected to fulfill all wage and welfare benefits required. This includes paying employees for each hour performed and contributing to the various fringe benefits funds no later than the 20th day of the month following the month in which they were accrued.
Failure to subsequently complete the contractual obligations may result in the SMART International Association filing a claim on the Local Union 67 Wage and Welfare Bond on behalf of any damaged union member employee. The bond will cover the wages and benefits due to the employees, as well as any legal fees incurred by the Association due to the filing of the bond claim.
If you receive an official claim notice from the SMART International Association, contact Jet as soon as possible. Once contacted, our team will go over the claims process, as well as ask for all available information and documentation regarding the claim. These tools will be used for Jet’s own review and investigation of the alleged wage and welfare violation.
In cases where the claim is found to be justified, Jet Insurance Company is legally obligated to make payment up to the bond’s limit. You, the employer, are held responsible for your own actions and are required to reimburse Jet for the full claim payout amount made on behalf of your transgressions. Failure to do so will result in future difficulties in obtaining a surety bond in the State of Texas, specifically Wage and Welfare Bonds that are required when hiring local union members.
If you are working with other trades such as contractors, plumbers, pipefitters, etc., you may be required by other local unions to file an additional Wage and Welfare Bond to protect its members.
