The City of San Antonio requires contractors of various trades to hold a license, registration or permit before beginning work. To be approved for a license, the contractor often has to cross additional red tape: securing a surety bond. Being the 8th most populous city in the United States, one way San Antonio guarantees the safety of its citizens is by requiring Contractor Bonds. Contractor Bonds offer restitution to anyone financially damaged when a contractor acts in a reckless manner, whether it’s accidental or intentional.
Check out the chart below for Contractor Bonds required in the City of San Antonio, along with their respective bond limits and Jet’s prices which start at $8 a month. Rates are based on the personal credit and experience of the principal applicant.

The may be the opportunity to purchase a liability policy to prove financial responsibility to cover damages, such as for irrigation contractors. However, liability policies are typically over $100 a month versus a surety bond cost of $100 a year.
The bond must be kept active for the duration of the contractor’s work in the City. Jet will send a renewal notice a few months ahead of time so you have plenty of time to remit payment, if necessary.
If you have questions about bond cancellation, please contact us at [email protected]. Most bonds are cancellable, but there may be a liability period (generally 30 days) once the City of San Antonio has been notified of the cancellation request.
The ultimate goal of Contractor Bonds is to hold contractors accountable for faulty workmanship, breach of contractor and failure to follow building codes. Let’s use a plumbing contractor as an example: A plumbing contractor has “finished” work at a residential job site. The plumber failed to properly secure a few bolts under the kitchen sink. A few days later, the customer experiences flooding which has led to damage to their linoleum floor. If the plumbing contractor chooses to fix the problem, no further action will be taken. However, failure to fix the flood damage will result in disciplinary action and can include a surety bond claim to cover costs. It doesn’t end there - even though Jet fronts the money to the damaged party on behalf of the contractor, the contractor is responsible for their actions and therefore must reimburse Jet (and any other surety company for that matter).
There are other contractor permits listed in the building code that may require a bond, including:
Non-contractor related licenses mentioned in the San Antonio municipal code that require a bond include:
