The surety bond is part of the permit registration process, explained in Section 18.02.104.7 of the El Paso Ordinances. It needs to be held in an amount of $25,000 for construction work or work on electrical, plumbing, gas, fire, or mechanical systems. The City of El Paso requires a Contractor Bond to be held by the following types of contractors:
However, if the following types of work are performed for less than $10,000, a $10,000 Contractor Bond will be sufficient:
A bond is not required by government agencies using employees to do the construction work, residential land owners working or hiring workers on their own land, or commercial building owners doing minor nonstructural remodeling work under $5,000.
In order to avoid claims on your Contractor Bond, you will need to make sure to follow all technical codes that apply to the permit (or permits) that you hold and complete your work as contracted. An applicant can have multiple permits for various work but only one bond needs to be issued; a copy of the bond will be accepted for additional permit applications. Failure to follow the technical codes can cause damage that you are responsible for; and if you do not step up and reimburse the damage that you caused, the injured party will look to the Contractor Bond for a refund. But, you will still need to pay Jet back for any bond claims.
