An Itinerant Merchant Bond may be required in a town or city as a way to protect the municipality and its citizens from unethical actions of the vendor, solicitor, merchant, or peddler. Where the bond is required, it helps guarantee that the city or town will receive payment for fees such as license, permit, or registration renewals. The bond is also a financial guarantee that residents who purchase goods or services from you are not being misled by false claims or being sold a faulty item.

PURCHASE ITINERANT MERCHANT BOND
The Itinerant Merchant Bond guarantees that you will conduct business ethically. Although each bond must adhere to the correlating city or town’s regulations, an Itinerant Merchant Bond generally protects customers who have purchased from you against losses due to defective products or being misled by claims you made regarding the products or services sold. A good example is actions indicated in Section 14-225 in the City of Clinton’s Code of Ordinances. The City of Greensboro’s Solicitor Bond also holds itinerant merchants liable for the failure to deliver on goods or services according to Section 13-202 of the Greensboro Code of Ordinances. An Itinerant Merchant Bond may also indemnify the obligee (the city or town) against missed payments such as license renewal fees.
To avoid bond claims, make sure that items or services being sold are not faulty and any claims to the performance of such items or services are not misleading. Additionally, paying all fees and due payments to the city or town will prevent against the obligee filing claims.
Before a claim is filed, the itinerant merchant may be subject to a penalty for a violation of the agreement with the city, such as in Angier. According to the Code of Ordinances, Section 9-71, a citation will be issued, which if left unpaid will result in a civil penalty and civil action.
If a claim is filed against your Itinerant Merchant Bond, Jet will investigate to make sure it is not a false allegation. If the claim turns out to be valid, Jet will pay the claim out to reimburse the offended party. This works as an extension of your credit, and you are still ultimately responsible for your actions, so payment must be made back to Jet in the amount of the claim.
