Motor vehicle dealers must file a $50,000 surety bond to be licensed with the Nebraska Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board. Jet’s entire bond process takes two minutes to complete. Get started:
Those selling vehicles by auction are required to file a $100,000 Motor Vehicle Auction Dealer Bond with the Board.
Those with a $50,000 bond limit can pay as low as $23 monthly or $225 for a one-year term. The rates reflected in the chart are the lowest available rates for those with good credit, but applicants with lower credit still save with Jet.
License Type | Bond Limit | Monthly | 1 Year | 2 Years |
---|---|---|---|---|
Motor Vehicle Dealer | $50,000 | $23 | $225 | $394 |
Auction | $100,000 | $45 | $450 | $788 |
Dealer Bonds are required for used vehicle dealers, new (franchise) vehicle dealers, trailer dealers, boat dealers, and wholesale dealers. Auction Bonds are required for those doing auctions three or more times per year.
Nebraska Revised Statute 60-1401 to 60-1441, known as the Motor Vehicle Industry Regulation Act, is in place to ensure that vehicle auctions and dealerships are run ethically and legally. The Motor Vehicle Industry Licensing Board enforces the surety bond as just one requirement to be a licensed auto dealer.
The license bond is issued through a third-party surety company (Jet) that guarantees recompense to those financially harmed in situations where a dealer acts in a fraudulent or negligent manner. Loss can occur in many ways, including failure to deliver a vehicle’s title, mismanagement of customer funds, false advertising, and odometer tampering.
Once you’ve input the necessary information, selected your preferred payment term, and paid for the bond, a copy of the bond and receipt will be ready for download.
For new applicants, Jet can file the bond for you. If renewing, your bond should be uploaded to the portal—the Board will send you a link via email around October 1st. Dealer Bonds are to be renewed on 12/31 annually, along with the license.
