The Weighing and Measuring Devices Bond is required of any serviceman or service agency in charge of installing, repairing, servicing, or reconditioning any commercial weighing device. This includes scale mechanics, moisture meter operators, and certified public weighers.
The bond limit is set by the Department of Agriculture at $1,000 and can be purchased for only $10 a month or an annual premium of $100.
The State of Georgia Commissioner of Agriculture requires this bond to guarantee that any commercial weighing device that affects fixed rates or service charges is accurate. This helps protect the public from devices giving faulty prices.
This bond does not apply to servicemen working under an agency. It would be the agency’s responsibility to ensure its business is licensed and bonded.
This bond process only takes a few minutes to complete from start to purchase. We don’t ask any unnecessary questions and try to keep things as simple as possible. This leaves you with less time applying and more time for fixing those weights!
Jet can take care of this for you. When you complete your application and purchase your bond, a copy will be immediately available to you and a paper transcript will be mailed out to the necessary Georgia office and a secondary copy to you.
This bond has an annual expiration of June 31st. Jet will remind you when it is time to renew, and as long as your payments are received in full and on time, your bond will continue to stay active.
If for some reason you need to file the bond yourself, perhaps with other paperwork, it can be sent to the following address:
Georgia Department of Agriculture Fuel and Measures Office
19 Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr., S.W.
Atlanta, GA 30334
To cancel this bond, email us at [email protected]. If you choose to pay the annual premium, you may be entitled to a prorated refund at the time of cancellation.
The Registered Serviceman or Service Agency of Weighing and Measuring Devices Bond has a 90-day cancellation grace period, meaning the bond will stay on file with the Department of Agriculture for 90 days following the receipt of the cancellation notice from Jet. This protects the public further, allowing any claims to be submitted and vetted during this time.
A registered serviceman or service agency is only held liable for a weighing device's performance until a licensed inspector of the Weights and Measures Division can make sure everything is correctly installed.
Examples of how NOT to avoid a claim would be to tamper with the devices you are installing or servicing and to not have proof of proper equipment upon request of the commissioner.
If you do happen to have a claim filed against you and decide that it is not worth paying, Jet will cover the reparations. But, the process does not end there. Whatever the total amount of damages that Jet Insurance Company covers, the registered serviceman or agency is responsible to pay Jet back the full amount. This is because surety bond claims are only paid out for avoidable and negligent actions for which the licensee is liable.
