Commercial, private, and public motorists that operate overweight and/or overdimension vehicles (sometimes referred to as excessive weight and size vehicles) on Florida highways and roadways must obtain a specific permit (blanket permit, ten-day trip permit, three-month route permit, etc.) from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) before a trip may commence. To be approved for and maintain an Over-Weight and Over-Dimension permit, a surety bond is required.
Jet Insurance Company provides the Overweight and Overdimension Bond to act as a financial assurance to the Florida Department of Transportation that the motorist will follow the permitted route and pay all monthly invoices due. If damages are caused to the route or if fees are not paid, the surety bond may be used as a means of restitution by the FDOT for any financial losses incurred.
According to the Florida Department of Transportation, the Over-Weight and Over-Dimension Bond must be in the amount of $100,000 per motorist and $200,000 per accident or occurrence. The FDOT will let you know the bond amount required when applying for or renewing your permit.
At Jet, rates for surety bonds are a small percentage of the required bond limits and are based on the personal credit score of the applicant. In this case, we may also request to review your business financials. To get started, simply select the “Apply for Your Bond” button!
To begin the online Overweight and Overdimension Bond application process, Jet will require some general information such as your contact details and social security number for a soft credit check (this won’t impact your current score). Once submitted, a Jet underwriter will conduct a review and if further info is necessary we’ll give you a quick call. Otherwise, approved rates will be sent to you via email allowing you to purchase immediately. All you need to do is select the best bond term for you and fulfill payment; you’ll receive a copy of your receipt and bond form once this last step has been completed.
The Jet team can file your surety bond for you at no extra charge! However, if you would prefer to take care of this task yourself, the option to do so may be selected at check out. The original signed and sealed Over-Weight and Over-Dimension Bond must be submitted to the Florida Department of Transportation at the following mailing address:
Florida Department of Transportation
Barry Building
3185 South Blairstone Rd
Tallahassee, FL 32301
For information on how to apply for an over-dimension and/or over-weight permit, take a look at the FDOT’s Over-Weight Over-Dimension Permits webpage (you’ll also find info on which permit is right for your vehicle and route).
The Overweight and Overdimension Bond is attached to the motorist’s permit, therefore the renewal of your bond is not an option. You will need a new bond for each new permit you obtain. If you do need to renew, give Jet a call at 855-296-2663 and we’ll help you out right away!
