In the State of Alabama, detective agencies, private investigators, and security guards are required by the Code of Alabama to obtain licenses from either the Alabama Private Investigation Board (ASIB) or Alabama Security Regulatory Board (ASRB). The bond indemnifies financially damaged parties and serves as a tool for city governments to support the ASIB and ASRB in their mission of holding businesses and individuals to a high standard of conduct and lawful behavior.

Even cancelling your bond is easier with Jet! Just provide Jet written notice that you wish to cancel your bond (email us at [email protected]), and we will communicate that intent to the city with which you hold your bond. Required cancellation periods do apply, and vary by city, generally from 10 to 30 days. See the table above for the number of days required to cancel your bond.
If you have selected Jet’s monthly payment option, your payments will cease once the liability is released. You will still need to pay for the cancellation period, as the bond technically remains active during this time. If you have selected Jet’s 1-year, 2-year, or 3-year payment options, your bond will still cancel once liability is released, and any available premium will be returned to you.
Renewing the Indemnity Bond for detective agencies, private investigators, and security guards will be required based on the particular bond terms for the city in which you operate, but is generally required on an annual basis. This anniversary date will be based on the date when you first filed your bond and not the anniversary date of your state-issued license with either the ASIB or ASRB.
First and foremost, detective agencies, private investigators, and security guards should comply with the Code of Alabama Sections 34-25B-3 and 34-27C-4 and the professional standards outlined by the Alabama Private Investigation Board or Alabama Security Regulatory Board. Claims originate from cases where the subject licensee breaks the law in the course of their duties and it results in damages to a member of the public.
Consider an example where a private investigator plants evidence to help law enforcement produce a conviction against a suspect. If the unlawful behavior is discovered, the wronged member of the public would have a rightful claim to financial damages inflicted by the private investigator. Following a wrongful conviction verdict in a court of law, there is likely to be a civil suit against the private investigator and a claim against the bond. Fines and criminal indictments may also apply, depending on the severity of the unlawful behavior.
If you receive a claim against your bond, notify Jet immediately. The Jet team will defend you to the maximum extent possible, but will need your full cooperation and honest communication to mount a successful defense.
If the claim is determined to be valid, Jet Insurance Company is obligated by the bond agreement and the Code of Alabama to pay the claim amount up to the full bond limit. If this occurs, Jet is acting as a financial guarantor on your behalf. You remain responsible for the actions that resulted in the bond claim and must reimburse Jet for the amount paid. Failure to do so would jeopardize your ability to secure a surety bond in the future, and hence impede your ability to perform business in Alabama.
While there is no license bond required by the State of Alabama, detective agencies, private investigators, and security guards should be thoroughly familiar with the bonding requirements in any jurisdiction in which they intend to operate their business.
