Certain contractor classifications may need to purchase a surety bond prior to beginning work in the City of Fairfield, Alabama. The City Manager’s Office regulates work done within city limits to ensure the safety of Fairfield’s people and land. The Fairfield Contractor Bond, offered by Jet Insurance Company, ensures there is compensation available to the City of Fairfield and its people if the contractor fails to uphold contractual obligations and causes financial harm.
The following contractor classifications need a license, permit, and bond prior to working in Fairfield:
Subcontractors must also secure a permit and license, and may be required to submit a bond. The process and details for obtaining a permit/license can be found here.
You can get the bond for as low as $100 with Jet! The cost depends primarily on the required bond limit. If the bond amount is under $25,000, you can apply for and purchase your bond right away - no credit check required! If the bond limit is $25,000 or above, an underwriter must review your credit through a soft credit check which does not impact your credit score. Review the chart below for the lowest prices offered at various bond limits.
Bond Limit | Cost |
---|---|
$5,000 | $100 |
$10,000 | $100 |
$25,000 | $125 |
$50,000 | $250 |
With Jet, you are guaranteed a simple process and an affordable rate for your Contractor Bond.
Applying for the bond only takes a few minutes! Those with bond limits under $25,000 will be able to input information and make payment immediately. If your bond limit is $25,000 or greater, the application process is still simple but an underwriter must do a quick review of your credit. Once a rate is approved, it will be sent to you via email for direct online purchase. A copy of the bond and your receipt is sent via email after purchase.
Jet is happy to file the bond for you, but if you prefer to file the bond yourself you can choose that option when making payment. The bond and any other paperwork should be sent to the following address:
City of Fairfield
City Clerk’s Office
4701 Gary Avenue
Fairfield, AL 35064
The bond must be active and on file with the City of Fairfield for the entire time you are performing work. The bond is purchased on an annual basis, but can be extended to line up with the license and/or permit. If you have any questions, or if there are any changes to the bond, please email us at [email protected].
The likelihood of disciplinary action, including a bond claim, is rare if you follow regulations in accordance with the City of Fairfield Ordinance Number 1019.
The City Clerk, or any other person who has sustained financial loss, may bring suit against the contractor if the contractor fails, neglects, or refuses to pay license fees or taxes. In this scenario, a contractor found guilty can be charged with a misdemeanor and fined up to $500. Each day constitutes a separate offense.
If any issues arise, it is best to be responsive and diligent in solving the issue(s) to avoid fines, license/permit revocation, or a bond claim.
When Jet is notified of a claim, we take the time to thoroughly review the claim details prior to making payment. However, valid claims must be paid in the amount of the claim, up to the full bond limit. You must pay Jet back in the amount that was paid out since you are liable for your actions as a contractor.
General contractors doing work over $50,000 may need a $10,000 bond if they are unable to meet a minimum net worth and working capital of $10,000.
