Skylar's Essay. The gig economy is growing in the United States with more and more people relying on independent work for income. What role do you see the gig economy playing in the future of the American economy?
So there I was, it was New Years Eve and after a long night out, celebrating, I realized I didn’t have a ride home. The local taxi service was booked, so I went to the app store on my phone and downloaded an app called Uber. Within half an hour I was home and sleeping in my bed. If it wasn’t for Uber, I have no idea when or if I would have made it home that night. The gig economy is growing in the United States with more and more people relying on independent work for additional income. The gig economy does not only play an innovative and resourceful role in the American economy, but it is also a uniquely thought out concept, which is becoming more recognized by today’s society. What is the Gig Economy? Uber, Airbnb, Spothero, Grubhub and others are all jobs that are app based and contribute to the constantly growing gig economy. These jobs consists of independent contracts and freelancers, seeking independent forms of work. Many individuals rely on these jobs for extra flexible hours and additional income needed to pa bills. There are currently 57.3 million freelancers working in the U.S. (Statista.com). Interestingly, most individuals who participate in the gig economy also maintain full-time jobs in addition to their gig work. What Role will the Gig Economy Play in the Future? Personally, I think that the role that the gig economy will play in the future of the American economy will continue to rise and become more used and recognized. “The gig economy is not new-people have always worked gigs… but today when most people refer to the “gig economy,” they’re specifically talking about new technology-enabled kinds of work.”-Ms. Molly Turner, Lecturer, Haas School of Business, University of California Berkley and the former Director of Public Policy for Airbnb (Naco.org). The gig economy has always existed, it is simply becoming more recognized, which is being done through the use of modern-day technology, such as downloadable apps. I think that as time goes on the use of the gig economy will become more utilized by the public. A significant amount of services offered within the gig economy are cheaper and more convenient than most franchises such as hotels and taxi services. In conclusion individuals who help make up the gig economy represent a diverse amount of professional skills and work experience. The gig economy is becoming more recognized and utilized by the public. The gig economy is a cheaper alternative which is equally providing people, who have full time jobs, additional opportunities to work for extra income in order to make ends meet. The gig economy is working cohesively with the American economy to create a business world full of wide range of job opportunities and options for consumers.
